I interviewed some people who attended cram schools when they were younger and I found that every single one of these girls really enjoyed going, at least in retrospect. The poet, statesman and calligrapher Sugawara-no-Michizane spent two years at Dazaifu in employed exile as its governor, before passing away from an excess of grief.
Fukuoka Prefectural Dazaifu High School is a Japanese high school located in Dazaifu, Japan. There are 11 statues of oxen at the shrine and it is believed by rubbing its head will make a person smarter. During Michizane’s funeral, the ox that pulled the coffin suddenly refused to move and stopped. Michizane was born into a family of scholar that served the emperor.

Although the new cram school was much more competitive, and everyone could see how well you did on the mock examinations by looking at a board with all the student's names on it, I honestly didn't dislike the school. As I mentioned earlier, the school was a couple of stations away from my town so I had to take the train which was sometimes a bit troublesome, but it also allowed me to make new friends from different schools.
Seeking to assuage it, Michizane's old foes promoted the angry ghost to Minister of the Left. You may notice several cow statues placed around the shrine premises. Cows are considered sacred animals as Michi-zane was born in the year of the Ox, according to the Chinese zodiac. The creatures are also believed to have played a role in the shrine's founding. Crowds of people can be seen patting the head of the sacred cow statue, as doing so is said to make one wiser. The shrine office issues goshu-in shrine stamps, which are a record of one's pilgrimage.
A 25 minute walk from the Dazaifu Government Offices will take you to the Site of Chikyuzen Kokubun-ji. The official map becomes slightly unhelpful here so pay close attention to the Historical Trail signs which appear periodically or, alternatively, follow the map on this guide. Ten minutes or so from the Kaidan-in Ordination Hall lies the site of the old Dazaifu Government Offices, known as Tofuro.
The cafe’s interior is in the retro style of the Taisho period (1912 – 1926), with a good balance of Japanese and Western elements. If you are lucky enough to be seated by the window, you can adore the little garden at the back of the café. To commemorate the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane, the god enshrined in Dazaifu Tenman-gū, mugwort is added to the dough used to make the rice cake.
The costumes and food are based on the few existing documents related to the event. About a five minute stroll from Sakamoto Hachiman-gu shrine, leads to the Dazaifu Exhibition Hall, which showcases the history of Dazaifu. The city is named after Kyushu's largest government office during the late 7th century to the early 12th century. Back then, Dazaifu also served a pivotal role in Japanese diplomacy and national defense. The historical city recently returned to the spotlight, for its association with Japan's new imperial era name.
While Kanzeon-ji is famous for its a literary legacy, its sister building, the Kaidan-in Ordination Hall, is perhaps even more beautiful. Its grounds are styled similarly to those of the Kōmyōzen-ji Temple, with raked white pebbles. Smaller Buddhist shrines also exist in the grounds giving the Kaidan-in a more simple majesty. Follow the map from the information office and the Historical Trail signposts to navigate from Tenmangu to Kanzeon-ji, a journey of approximately 30 minutes.
