Express trains from Taipei can reach Taitung in a mere 3.5 hours (non-express ones take longer). You can also fly from Taipei’s downtown Songshan airport to Taitung. Chishang is roughly a 40-minute train ride from Taitung Train Station. Make sure you take one of the express trains; otherwise, you’ll be wasting a lot of time on transport. The best way to explore Chishang is to rent a bike at the TR9 store next to the train station.
An interesting drive southward, cutting across the Po Delta, then through the gentle Umbrian hills to medieval Assisi, where St. Francis was born in 1182. Visit the world-famous BASILICA with its beautiful frescoes by Giotto, then head for Rome.
