Express trains from Taipei can reach Taitung in a mere 3.5 hours (non-express ones take longer). You can also fly from Taipei’s downtown Songshan airport to Taitung. TiinTinnis a great mid-range option if you’re into minimalist IG vibes. The staff is lovely, and they have a couple of bicycles you can use for free. Just know there is no elevator, so don’t bring lots of luggage. The shop dates back to 1934, and people literally queue up to buy these soft, chewy balls of goodness.

This artsy cafe has Taitung coffee as well as other coffee and teas and a small but interesting menu. Taitung's nightlife has been described as subdued, that may be true but there are of course some bars. What Taitung does have, however, is a rather large number of cafes. Since Taitung County grows coffee beans it is also possible to find truly local coffee at several establishments.

Chishang is roughly a 40-minute train ride from Taitung Train Station. Make sure you take one of the express trains; otherwise, you’ll be wasting a lot of time on transport. The best way to explore Chishang is to rent a bike at the TR9 store next to the train station.
An interesting drive southward, cutting across the Po Delta, then through the gentle Umbrian hills to medieval Assisi, where St. Francis was born in 1182. Visit the world-famous BASILICA with its beautiful frescoes by Giotto, then head for Rome. Venice is more like a marvellous film set than a real-life city, with crisscrossing canals, gondolas and water buses, arched bridges, palaces, and busy little piazzas. Formerly known as 1st Square, ASEAN Square is the best (only?) place in Taichung where you can buy stuff from South East Asia.
