The Ceremony played witness to the first light of our Festival rainbow cowboy hat hitting unceded Aboriginal Land, as Aunty Nadeena Dixon Welcomed us to Country with a Smoking Ceremony, and dancers from the Buuja Buuja-Butterfly Dance Group. The 2025 Festival theme FREE TO BE is a celebration of the strides toward true LGBTQIA+ equality while also acting as a global reminder that our fight is far from over,  and that we are not truly free until we are all free to be.

Mardi Gras Party has been the beating heart of the Festival for over 40 years, bringing together over 10,000 people on the biggest night of Sydney's queer party calendar. In 2023, over 250,000 spectators were captivated as more than 12,000 participants took to the streets in a spectacular display of colour, creativity and pride. As always, the Parade will be led by the beloved Dykes on Bikes, First Nations and 78er floats.
